Based in
California, Inovonics manufactures and
markets a wide range of top-value equipment for radio broadcasters.
Inovonics was founded in 1972 by Jim Wood and Mark Drake, two
seat-of-the-pants "engineers" recently let go from a failing firm
in the music business. (No, the business failure was nothing they did!)
Mark thought "Novonics" was a catchy name, but that was already
taken in the state of California,
so he selected a name 180-degrees out of phase: "Inovonics". (Let
this put to rest any idea of the name being a contraction of 'innovation'
and 'electronics'.)
Our intrepid entrepreneurs started with a single idea for a marketable
product, a solid-state recording electronics package for the thousands of
Ampex 350-series tape recorders, still the workhorses of the recording and
broadcasting industries in the early 1970s. The product was an unqualified
success, and in its several versions over the following years nearly ten
thousand channels were sold.
The product line was expanded to include high speed tape duplicating and
film recording products, audio signal processing and acoustic
instrumentation equipment. Inovonics' first broadcast audio processing
product was the Model 220 "Audio Level Optimizer". This was
followed by various single band and multiband processors, stereo
generators, processor/generator combo units, and AM and FM Modulation
Monitors.
Forever the champion of marginal technologies and lost causes, Inovonics
was on the forefront of Stereo-AM with the defunct Magnavox system; worked
closely with CBS Laboratories on the ill-fated "FMX"
range-extension scheme for FM; and even supported "Noise Free Radio",
a questionable narrowband-FM modulation proposal to rejuvenate the AM
broadcast band.
Nevertheless, it is with its mainstream broadcast products that Inovonics'
name is most closely associated. From our exceptionally successful range of
audio processing products, to the more recently introduced RDS/RBDS
encoders and test and monitoring equipment, we provide high quality,
cost-effective designs for the broadcast professional.
Inovonics continues to explore the latest developments in broadcast audio
and operational practices, with the current product range reflecting our
dedication to radio. Our product line is under continuous expansion and
diversification, so watch this space and our media ads as bold new ideas
are developed into top-value products for broadcasters.

AUDIO
PROCESSORS
Audio processors are at the heart of the Inovonics product
line and are used by AM and FM stations to create a 'signature sound,'
and to enhance audio clarity and coverage. Processing is also employed in
audio production, Webcasting, and for TV sound.
STEREO GENERATORS
These encode the FM broadcast 'baseband' signal with the stereo audio
program. Inovonics stereo generators (or stereocoders) are simple to
install and provide excellent stereo imaging. Designs are compatible with
both radio data (RDS/RBDS) and subcarrier (SCA) operation.
MONITORS
Ensure that your broadcast signals are within specification with Inovonics
'Mod-Monitors.' Our unique designs are available to check AM, FM, RDS/RBDS
and SCA signals, either off-air or from direct transmitter feeds.
RDS / RBDS AND SCA EQUIPEMENT
Our RDS/RBDS encoders and monitors have proved increasingly-popular
additions to the Inovonics product line. Scrolling text messages can be
sent for display on the faceplate of listeners' radios.
RECEIVERS
Unlike our monitoring equipment, which is intended for the analysis of
broadcast signals, our 'translator' (rebroadcast) receivers are designed
for daily use in the broadcasting chain itself.
OTHER PRODUCTS
